Training from Secon Solar

Secon have been involved in solar training for many years in a variety of venues and organisations, both on and off site. We also offer training in our purpose built training room, catering for groups up to about 8 and share installation expertise and commissioning/fault finding knowledge with you. We offer basic 1-day courses or more advanced bespoke to suit your needs. Please note we do not offer BPEC or LOGIC certification type solar courses, as these are available from many other training providers.

Basic Course content:

  • Energy background, Solar resource and geometry
  • Domestic Hot water System overview - Direct, Indirect, Drainback, pressurised
  • The Resol controller range and common applications - A/AX, BS 3/4, BS Plus, ES, E, M
  • Using the BS3 controller - factory settings, making adjustments, “hands on” activity
  • BS series Options - Heat quantity measurement, Thermostat function, Back up heating,
  • Using common systems with BS Plus controller  - Two stores, East /West
  • Questions, fault finding and recap
  • Filling and commissioning systems - Pump speed selection, Flowrate adjustment, Filling and venting systems

Staff

Technical Manager Nick Davies delivers most of the training material and has considerable experience in electronic control, energy efficiency and integration of renewable energy in buildings. Nick has five years experience training electricians in FE and was a senior consultant at BRE for five years, giving regular energy awareness and renewable presentations and providing technical support to the Clear Skies and LCBP grant programs.

Technical advisors John Shaw and Paul Hind also contribute to training sessions - more details to follow.

Director Iain Calderwood has over 30 years experience of UK solar practice, supply and installation. Iain has mentored many installation companies through to becoming Clear Skies approved installers (precursor to MCS) and was a regular trainer during the first BPEC courses at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT). Iain has designed and overseen installation of solar thermal equipment on a range of buildings throughout the UK from the late 1970s onwards.
